Physical Therapy is a conservative treatment for pain, injury, or disease in your body. Learning to heal without chemicals can be challenging initially, especially if the pain in your body is so bad it limits your ability to move or function normally.


Not all pain can be relieved with conservative measures, and at the same time - not all pain medications help to completely resolve pain. There is no harm in combining medications with physical therapy. In fact, early stages of tissue healing are best combated with a combination of medicine plus movement.


It is the hope of most PTs that with continued physical therapy, patients can decrease their need to use medications. There are many research articles that discuss the benefits of Physical Therapy, including its ability to help people wean away from medications for pain, high blood pressure, arthritis, and more.


The debate on whether physical therapy or surgery should be the first step towards reducing chronic pain has been around for ages. As time goes on and more research is done, outcomes of patients receiving Physical Therapy first demonstrate more success with long term pain relief in addition to decreased dependence on pain medications such as opioids or other addicting drugs.
